With July 4 celebration preparations underway in Phili roads were closed so it took a while for Chris and Jo to find somewhere to park but eventually they did and we were able to go and see the Liberty Bell. Originally called the State House Bell it was used to summon citizens of Philadelphia to hear the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence and Assembly members to meetings. The bell gained iconic importance when those wishing to abolish slavery adopted it as their symbol and gave it the name "Liberty Bell", in reference to its inscription. It has a large crack in it which started small but due to poor remedial action/repair it expanded making the bell unringable.
10.30am it was finally off to New York. Today it was all on the Interstate and toll roads which took us straight to Staten Island where we got rid of the bike and jumped into an air-conditioned bus who took us into Manhattan and dropped us off at our hotel. It had been arranged for everyone to meet in the Lobby at 5.00pm; we went down a little early for a drink only to find the bar closed. Bugga! One of the hotel employees told us the hotel puts on free wine, beer and food at 5.00pm so we waited for that so we could partake then it was off to explore and old friend, New York!!!!
Here are some pic's:
It was still very warm and had plenty of people , as it was home time for a lot but we still managed to weave our way through the streets to Times Square for another look before finding an Irish bar for a beer; then myself, Judy and Woody went and had a little explore ending up on 5th Avenue and in Grand Central Station. On the way back to the hotel we experienced a New York downpour which we managed to avoid getting wet in; they certainly freshen the air but doesn't make it any cooler.
It is now midnight and I have just gone down to the laundry to take our clothes out of the dryer, so now it is shut eye time. Goodnight; especially to Jayde, Ellie and Paige: we miss you guys.
