Rockland here we come!

Weirs Beach to Rockland was the next part of our journey via some lovely back roads, though some maintenance wouldn't go missing, through Portland and onto Rockford and our lodgings for the next two nights.

The countryside up to Portland was absolutely lovely. The back yard America is something that is to be admired: the people are friendly and courteous and the scenery was good. Looking at the houses it is though the same builder built them all with just a few subtle changes.

Nothing really exciting but great to see: great to be out of the big cities and seeing backyard America.

Having said this Portland was good though we only passed through to the other side of it for lunch at Gritty's Pub.

Once clearing Portland it was the last push through to our resting place of Rockland Maine. This is where we are staying.

The main house.

This is the Coach House where we stayed.

Fruit pie and ice cream whenever you wanted it.

Rockland has about 7,300 people living there. Rockland isn't that spectacular today and I think its lobster industry is their claim to fame, but it is a popular tourist destination. It was once-upon-a time a very wealthy town as it supplied a lot of lime to build the brown stone buildings in Boston and New York. The house we are in was built by a wealthy banker for his wife and one child; it has three floors! the coach house where our room is used to house the coach, its horses and the best man/chaffeur; it's the size of a normal 4 bedroom home in NZ.

Tomorrow it is exploring local treats; can't wait!
