We left Halifax at 8.00am, first stop was the Citadel at the top of the hill.
Fort George, Halifax Citedal, was built by the British in 1749 out of granit, this was no mean feat as Nova Scotia/Canada doesn't have any granit so it all had to be imported, and was rebuilt in its current form between 1828-1856. The fort was deemed so strategically important that it was rebuilt 3 times but was never once attacked. It is currently under-going a further restoration. We were only meant to only drive around the outside as it didn't open to the public until 9.00am bit Jo and Chris found an entrance that took us inside and got us all a telling off - Craig an extra telling off because he kept walking around the top leading the elderly guard on a merry chase 😂😂😂
Anyway, we found our way out of the city before being arrested and onto the interstate heading to our breakfast stop, a truck stop that had the meanest breakfast you could wish for; I was still full at dinner!
From here it was off to find the longest covered bridge in the world in Hartland, New Brunswick; we found it! well actually Chris and Jo found it and we got to enjoy it and ride through it.
After the bridge it was a long long dash to Quebec via some very nice villages along the way and an experience ordering Subway knowing no French; that was fun!
Our next treat was the Grand Falls and control gates for a hydro power station; the gates are used most of the year to hold back the water so it can be diverted into a tunnel and down to the station; in the spring they open the gates as with the rain comes an abundance of excess water.
Reaching Quebec and seeing it for the first time was a treat: what a sight and to see the big Chateau Frontenac on the hill, wow! this is what greeted us...
Once we got settled into our hotel, Hotel Champain, we headed out to explore and explore we did; we even ventured outside the old city wall!
We are staying inside the wall of the old city which is very beautiful and filled with shops, bars and restaurants plus the Chateau, and is very easy to walk around. Whilst it was fine when we started it did rain which wasn't too bad and didn't deter us at all. Here are some shots, more to come tomorrow.
